Shaylan Kolodney
PhD student
Shaylan Kolodney earned her B.A. in Environmental Science from Skidmore College. During her undergraduate studies, she worked with The Soil Inventory Project (TSIP) to help build a continental-scale soil carbon inventory held in public trust. She also researched optimal site selection methods for near-surface soil organic carbon inventorying.
Upon graduation, she was hired by Caney Fork Farms, a regenerative farm in Middle Tennessee as the Research & Education Coordinator. In this role, Shaylan collaborated with a team of scientists on various research projects, including mung bean trials, nitrogen-fixing corn trials, tracking changes in soil carbon on transitioning land, and monitoring changes in soil health within an agroforestry system. In addition to her role as the Research & Education Coordinator, she also served as a Livestock Assistant, helping to manage cows, sheep, and pigs using regenerative farming techniques.
Shaylan is passionate about harnessing the potential of agricultural production to restore soil health and mitigate climate change. Currently, she is a graduate research assistant in Dr. Kate Tully’s Agroecology Lab, where she is working on the ACRE project, studying soil and greenhouse gas dynamics in a switchgrass production system on the Delmarva Peninsula.
